in loving memory of couch (1996-2010)

On November 24, 2010 I finally say good-bye to you, dear couch. Life was good back in the beginning, when it was just you and me and an old cocker spaniel named Corky. He was a senior and couldn't jump up on you. This was back in the old days before I did animal rescue. Your color was a glorious green and you were soft and clean and everyone who came to visit would marvel at how cozy and comfy you were. On Sunday mornings, I would sip coffee and read a good book curled up on you in a sunny window. Sometimes I would bring Corky up to cuddle on you and we enjoyed many good years together.
Then one at a time, new dogs would come home with me. I'd fix one up, find a new home and then go back to the shelters to find another one to rescue. A few times you got sprinkled on by a male dog here and there but you never complained about it. I cleaned you up and you were a good sport about it. Then as time wore on, I began to cover you with blankets and sheets and comforters, to keep the dog hair off of you. I only meant to do this to protect you, not to hide you away. You became a couch that the rescue doggies would come to enjoy. The rotating doors of Camp Cocker had many dogs come through here whom you so generously allowed to lay on you and you gave them comfort.
Then we rescued some puppies and oh boy, you were not prepared for this. The chewing started on your corner, then on the one arm. We tried to cover you with more blankets and the puppies just started in on the other arm. Then we covered that and they started chewing off your green skirt at your base, then we completely removed the skirt. Then the puppies began to pull off what was left of your base and chewed right through to the wood. They tore out your foam, they had their fun with you and still you did not complain.
Couch, we had a good run, didn't we? I am sorry to say good-bye to you but it is time for you to go where all good couches go . . . over the rainbow bridge. I hear that when you get to the other side, you magically become like brand new again. And that the puppies over on that side of the bridge do not chew nice couches like you. I hope you know how much comfort you brought to all of the doggies at Camp Cocker and that you were a good good couch. Now run along now, join your other couch friends and don't forget how much we all loved you!
