12/5/22 - BAILEY ARRIVES IN LOS ANGELES!

WELCOME TO CAMP COCKER RESCUE BAILEY!

Meet FREEDOM FLYER BAILEY - one of the eleven Cocker Spaniels who were rescued from a puppy mill.

Camp Cocker Rescue was contacted by KDS, a rescue organization in South Korea, asking us if we might be able to take eleven cocker spaniels that they rescued from a puppy mill closure. There were twenty seven dogs in total, and we of course said YES!

These dogs were living in cruel conditions and sadly, the breeder had debarked them all. 💔💔💔

The eleven dogs that Camp Cocker is taking in have booked their flights and are arriving here in Los Angeles in small groups - beginning the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Bailey is estimated to be about 8-10 years old, is neutered, vaccinated, and weighs 22 pounds. He has dry eye in both eyes and will need daily eye drops.

Beautiful Bailey is good with other dogs, but he’s shy and can be quite timid around new people and new situations.

UPDATE 2/6/23 FROM BAILEY’S FOSTER FAMILY:

Bailey is slowly becoming more confident.

We highly recommend the following for him for his new home:

  • 1 or more dogs (he will thrive!!)

  • At least a small yard area

  • A quiet area to walk

  • A family that can put a plan in place for fireworks holidays (New Year, 4th of July). Starting months before, to begin a desensitization routine or at least have a weekly night playing music or watching a movie inside the house, at a higher volume, for an hour or so around fireworks times. Start slowly though.

He's definitely more confident and very happy on a raised area, like a couch or the bed. He feels safe there and likes to supervise what you are doing.

Like our other “puppy mill eleven” dogs, not a fan of walking in the rain or pottying when it's raining.

Potties in the back yard and on walks. He is still learning potty training. But most days his wrap is dry. And he sleeps through the night.

Leash walking:
• He's still a little skittish, but...
• He likes to walk on grass
• He likes potty walks around the neighborhood

Car rides: Does fine in the car

He really benefits from the company of another dog, or dogs, for reassurance. This is helpful around the house and on walks. He also likes to pack sleep with them... resting next to them with body contact, or his head on their back.

Feeding:

  • Eats well, but like a finicky toddler, doesn't care for added supplements to his food. He does eat low fat cottage cheese.

  • Small Batch lightly cooked chicken recipe

  • Lucy Pet small breed kibble (for gut balance)

Rare potty accidents in the house. If it happens it's because his poops were a bit soft and he couldn't hold it. He walks to the sliding door if he needs to go potty. He still occasionally pees in his party pants. But this is infrequent.

He comes out of his shell in the yard. His tails wags a lot when he is outside in the yard. He enjoys sitting outside on the outdoor couch.

Loves napping on the couch or bed. He'll totally hang out with you when you watch tv! He also likes a nice den, like a doggie bed under a desk.

Startles easily:
• With loud noises... construction on nearby houses, or when you drop something on the floor. He becomes skittish.
• Fast footsteps
• Fast movement
We have already seen a decrease in reaction to normal inside sounds.

Bailey has limited vision:
• He needs you to pause him before hazards he can't notice in time on walks
• Stairs... will need a buffer at the top of stairs in your home until he learns the layout
• But he navigates just fine, and enthusiatically jumps on or off the bed or couch. He has mastered the stairs.

A lot of his confidence stems from not being able to see well in the past. But this can improve!

More on Bailey’s limited vision: Long term untreated dry eye causes pigment deposits on the dog’s corneas. This sometimes can be reversed with routine prescription eye drops and keeping their eyes lubricated. Bailey is currently being treated with Cyclosporine, Neo-Poly-Dex, & GenTeal eye drops - and rechecks with the vet to monitor his condition. The Cyclosporine & GenTeal drops will both need to be continued daily for life.

I will begin working with touch training and clicker training to build his confidence. We've been going slow with him.

Thank you for your patience! He's definitely relaxing more and he's playing with toys and seeks out affection. 💜

Bailey is being fostered in the Los Angeles area.
