Freddie

Adopted march 2024!

Freddie’s Story:

This handsome gentleman joined Camp Cocker in February 2023 after he was found at the Lancaster, CA Animal Shelter. Estimated to be at least 9 years of age, and sweet as can be, Freddie had been picked up as a stray and was never claimed. He was overweight, in serious need of dental care, and had an upper respiratory infection with an intermittent cough. Once his stray hold was up, Freddie was neutered and vaccinated before leaving the shelter. Our own vet discovered that he had a low grade heart murmur, infections in both ears, Giardia, slight anemia, and cortisol levels that needed to be checked to rule out Addison's disease (thankfully, that test came back normal). Following a thorough workup, the veterinary cardiologist diagnosed Freddie with severe mitral valve disease, so he will need to stay on heart medication and visit a cardiologist every six months for rechecks. During his dental procedure, Freddie had ten teeth extracted! A few months later, he had a mass removed and, during that exam, the vet found some oral fistulas where his canine teeth had been removed. It took a few surgeries and a doggy dentist to get them repaired.

Freddie’s foster mom discovered that he is the perfect dog! Not only is he gorgeous, but he is the sweetest boy ever. He is so friendly, easy going, never reactive, he’s even fully house-trained. He has a loud bark when he gets excited, but he’s very well behaved. After a few months on his heart meds, Freddie’s cardiologist reported an improved level of mitral valve stenosis and extended his life expectancy! He also dropped from 42 lbs to a healthy 28 lbs.

Likely because of his age, and perhaps also his heart condition, it took a long time to find Freddie his forever home. Once adopted, he settled in quite nicely. He learned their doggie door in a NY minute and enjoys going in and out all day long. They tell us he’s quite the investigator! His mom works from home, so Freddie enjoys lots of walks with her and with a dog walker that visits a couple times a week. Freddie has three new dog siblings (also rescues) known as Murray, Peanut, and Fennie. They are so happy to have Freddie as part of their group! The dogs are reportedly kings of the castle - dogs beds everywhere, the couch is theirs, their parents’ bed is theirs, etc. They enjoy taking trips to the beach and exploring their beautiful property in Sonoma.

From Freddie’s adopters: ”We are thrilled to have him in our lives.”
