Greta

Adopted DECEMBER 2022!

Greta’s Story:

Gorgeous Greta was rescued from the Inland Valley Humane Society in August 2022. Both of her eyes were bulging with painful glaucoma, so we offered to pay the shelter extra to do her eye enucleation when they spayed her, as well as a full blood panel prior to surgery. It must have been such a relief for Greta once that surgery was done! She adjusted to life post-enucleation with such ease, we suspect that she’d already been blind for some time. Greta was also significantly overweight (weighing 34.4 lb when we got her) and had dirty, matted fur. Despite her condition and having clearly been neglected, Greta was an absolute lovebug, always wagging her little stump (sadly, her tail had been docked by whoever had her before) and seeking out affection from people. She’s a five-star snuggler and has the softest fur and tummy!

Greta’s new family tell us that she is doing great and quickly getting the hang of things there. She now has two adorable doggy siblings: Frankie, an older shih tzu mix who is also blind and very mellow, and Nala, a boisterous young terrier mix who rules the roost. It took Nala a few days to accept having a new big sister, but the two now play and cuddle together constantly and Nala even stands up for Greta to other dogs who might growl at her! Their parents had a trainer visit their home who was able to explain the dogs’ body language, as well as give some good tips on how to make play time more fun for everyone. Even when it's treat time, everyone will sit and wait without "competing" for it. Greta is so well behaved that the moment her parents say “go to bed, Greta” she quickly gets into her bed and dozes off.

Every day Greta becomes more and more comfortable there and is loving the Texas life... minus the occasional ice storm! She is learning her way around the new environment and is getting more confident on their walks through the neighborhood, where everyone wants to meet the beautiful cocker spaniel with no eyes and hear her rescue story. Greta lets her powerful nose guide their way to their home, very smart and super cute. Greta sometimes hangs out at their vet’s office when her mom has to go into work and they all adore her there (how could anyone not? Greta really is the perfect dog!). Nala is always there to greet her sister at the door when she gets home and Greta seems to have adjusted to Nala’s higher energy level (whereas, because she cannot see, Greta used to get irritated with any dog who would get up in her face).

We’re thrilled to see Greta fitting in so well with her new pack. Plus, on her healthy fish and potato diet, she’s already lost 10 pounds! All three dogs visit a rehab facility once a week, too, where Greta gets acupuncture and physical therapy to help with some minor arthritis and her overall well-being. Her parents also had full body x-rays done and took her to see a cardiologist because of a slight heart murmur. They are determined to help Greta live the longest, healthiest, happiest life possible.

From Greta’s adopters: “We love her, she's such a great pup! …thank you so, so much for taking her into your rescue and giving her a chance to find her forever home… we can't imagine our home without her now.
