Gumbo

Adopted OCTOBER 2023!

Gumbo’s Story:

Hubba hubba handsome Gumbo joined Camp Cocker Rescue at the end of October 2023, traveling to America as one of our Freedom Flyers from Mongolia. This sweet cocker spaniel was rescued from certain death as a stray dog in Mongolia by a Good Samaritan who found him. Gumbo was underweight and dirty, looking for food and drinking dirty rain water. The Good Samaritan drove hundreds of miles to bring Gumbo to safety with the rescuers at Хөөрхөн Зулзага ТББ so that he could be protected from hunters who are hired to eliminate stray dogs. Temperatures drop down to 35 degrees below zero in the freezing winters there. If Gumbo hadn’t frozen to death, the hunters would have gotten him. Sadly, there are no good options for stray dogs in Mongolia unless one of the two underfunded rescues there take them in. We couldn't say no to Gumbo! He represents what animal rescue is all about. Many people were a part of Gumbo’s rescue story and he was surely worth all of the effort.

Now living in beautiful Berkeley, CA and going by the name Benito, he is loving life as a cherished family member. At 2-4 years of age, his parents (who excitedly met him at the airport upon his arrival from Mongolia) tell us he is such a sweet dog and is adjusting very well for the short time he has been with them. Benito is super friendly, making friends wherever he goes. This good boy also gets along well with other dogs and has been great with their cat, Paddington. His anxiety has ups and downs, which is normal after everything he’s gone through. We are so proud of him!

From Benoto’s adopters: “We love the little guy!
