Freedom Flight PUPPY MILL RESCUE!!

** ARRIVAL 12/5/22 ** - - - - - *** haRRY has been ADOPTed!!! ***

WELCOME TO CAMP COCKER RESCUE HARRY!

Meet FREEDOM FLYER HARRY - one of the eleven Cocker Spaniels who were rescued from a puppy mill.

Camp Cocker Rescue was contacted by KDS, a rescue organization in South Korea, asking us if we might be able to take eleven cocker spaniels that they rescued from a puppy mill closure. There were twenty seven dogs in total, and we of course said YES!

These dogs were living in cruel conditions and sadly, the breeder had debarked them all. 💔💔💔

The eleven dogs that Camp Cocker is taking in have booked their flights and are arriving here in Los Angeles in small groups - beginning the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Harry is estimated to be about 6-8 years old, is neutered, vaccinated, and weighs 21 pounds. He is a friendly boy, friendly with people and other dogs.

Detailed Updates (2/5/2023) from Harry’s Foster Mom:

TRAINING: I took Harry to a trainer, and we are working on three things.

1. Name recognition. I was sure he knew his name because he will come immediately to me when I call him. But when she used his name he did not respond. She thinks he just comes when I call, because I’m calling, not because he recognizes Harry.

2. "Heel" and "Follow me" on walks. He is SO eager on walks that he pulls and he still will go side to side, which personally makes it really difficult to walk three dogs. And with two cocker spaniels in the house, one old and one potty training, we take them out on about ten short walks a day. (3 longer ones) Lisa says give him a position and a verbal cue to help him want to stay on one side. And when he really pulls we switch directions.

3. Sit. Now that we can use his own kibble as treats, we are having new success with "sit". It was tricky while he had diarrhea for so long. Now we are putting some extra weight on him and using the Lucy kibble as treats.

POTTY TRAINING:

He is doing really well, but I don't trust him without the belly band because we take them out so frequently, we find his belly band is usually dry! Twice we were gone for 4 hours and he peed in his band both times. He's had one poop in the house but that's it. I've seen him lift his leg on a couple things in the house, and I think its getting less as he's more comfortable here. We switched to feeding him outside, because we couldn't break his habit of marking all the food dishes when he finishes his meal. That works. He waits patiently outside the door til our dogs are done, then we pick up the dishes and he comes in.

GROOMING:

He did just fine at the groomers getting his nails trimmed. He does really well getting his ear medication 2 x per day. He is NOT good at getting his teeth brushed, but Dr alex says he has some bad teeth in back that are probably causing him some pain, so he wasn't surprised Harry doesn't want you in his mouth. (Dental being scheduled.)

PLAY & EXERCISE:

Speaking of, we bought him some smaller tennis balls because his mouth is a little small for regular ones. He likes to chase, sometimes he will pick it up and we can play a little fetch. Sometimes not.

I may look up basic agility videos on YouTube, because he is really good at running and hopping. I think his favorite weather are the days after rain, where he can nap in sun patches and hop over many puddles on walks.

We have walked the 20 mins to the dog park twice, and he likes to greet the other dogs and people.

PERSONALITY:

He truly has a confident personality and his body language may better most adorable I've seen. He will sleep wrapped in my arms all night if I initiate it.

He is so friendly with all people, he gets a lot of attention. He likes to rub up on people with that cute tail and he kind of steals the show in any setting.

Hope this helps! I can't report any major changes, but the minor changes happen all the time and its wonderful to see him getting more comfortable. People that meet him have no idea how stressed he was 6 weeks ago. They can't imagine it. He's a really good dog.
