Liam

Adopted JULY 2019!

Liam’s Story:

Darling Liam was born in the care of Camp Cocker on May 5th, 2019 just two weeks after we rescued his pregnant mother, Sydney, from the San Bernardino Shelter. Little Liam was struggling to nurse, and we were back and forth to our vet with him daily, supplementing his nursing with puppy formula and trying to bottle feed him. Liam was losing weight in the first week of life and we were all so worried about losing him. After the first week, however, Liam finally began to gain weight and the worse appeared to be over.

Adopted by an incredibly loving family with another cutie pie Cocker Spaniel, named Layla, Liam had SO much fun playing with his new sister and being super snuggly with his parents. Delightful and charming, this sweetheart was full of personality and love. Unfortunately, just a few months after his adoption, we learned from Liam's family that he was on oxygen in the emergency room after having a seizure and throwing up blood. A few days later, Liam’s neurologist did an MRI and he was diagnosed with epilepsy. The hospital also repeated Liam’s chest x-rays, which showed that his lungs were back to normal. He was put on two anti-seizure medications and we felt relieved because many epileptic dogs can live a long and normal life with daily medication.

About a week later, however, Liam was back in the hospital on oxygen after having another cluster of short seizures. Liam was in a respiratory crisis with non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema (NCPE). Pulmonary Edema is an acute state of respiratory distress that causes the lungs to fill up with fluid quickly. It is very rare for seizures to send a dog into the respiratory distress of NCPE, especially with seizures that are so brief in length. Liam then began having more seizures while in the hospital, despite all of the medications and care that he was receiving there. Sadly, we had to come to terms with the fact that Liam’s lungs could collapse after any one of these episodes. The thought of his lungs collapsing in and dying of asphyxiation was absolutely horrifying. At just 5 months of age, Liam’s life was tragically cut short.

The hospital let this special boy spend his final moments out of the oxygen chamber, surrounded by love, and being held and kissed all over his precious face. Everyone’s hearts were absolutely broken. Words cannot describe how much we LOVED this precious little puppy monkey. Some dogs go a lifetime without this much love.

Rest In Peace, baby Liam. You touched the hearts of so many.
