Lucy

Adopted SEPTEMBER 2022!

Lucy’s Story:

Darling little Lucy joined Camp Cocker Rescue in September 2022 when we partnered with the Humane Society of San Diego to take in some beagles fated for a life of pain and suffering. Over 4000 beagles had been rescued from the inhumane conditions of a high volume commercial breeder, known as Envigo, a research organization that works with the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Beagles are a naturally docile breed that is highly sought by drug companies to do experiments on. The Envigo beagles were confiscated by federal authorities due to dozens of violations and a lengthy history of mistreatment. The American Humane Society helped out by distributing these beagles to Humane Society locations all around the U.S.. Lucy flew from Virginia to San Diego, CA along with 108 others. She was one of four beagles that joined Camp Cocker that day.

Lucy was only eight months old at the time of her rescue (we figured out her age from her ear tattoo). Luckily, she seems to have escaped most of the PTSD that many of the older rescued beagles exhibit. It did take her a while to feel calm and adjust to being in a home that first night, but she got there. Now known as Charlie, she is having so much fun with her new family. She loves her new doggy siblings (Bowie, Mardi, and June) and they love her! They have a blast playing in the yard and chasing squirrels together. Charlie really enjoys being in the backyard and likes to lay in the grass and listen to the birds.

Charlie is still getting used to some sounds that are new and scary to her, like the lawnmower and car alarms, but she enthusiastically enjoys getting special treats like a puppachinni from the coffee shop. She’s very playful and energetic, loves toys, and likes to chew things in true puppy fashion. She absolutely loves playing in the rain and the smell of fresh cut grass. She enjoys daily walks and visits to the dog park 4-5 times a week, where she’s made another beagle friend to play with! Her family began training classes with her near Sacramento with a trainer that has a fantastic reputation and they tell us that Charlie is so smart! At night, Charlie sleeps snuggled right up between her parents and insists on using the pillow like a human.

We are so grateful to have found such amazing adopters for Charlie. She is going to know life only as a much spoiled family member from now on!
