Archie’s Story
Rescue Date: April 14, 2024
Origin: Vet
Archie is a 3-year-old male Golden Doodle who was owner-relinquished due to the owner’s inability to provide urgently needed medical care.
Archie was relinquished to his veterinarian in April, approximately two weeks after he ate a sock that became lodged in his intestines. X-rays showed that the ingested sock was completely blocking his digestive tract. He was no longer eating, and had become severely underweight.
Archie was urgently in need of surgery to extract the sock but was too weak for immediate surgery when he was relinquished. He was started on a course of antibiotics and pain meds, and was given a plasma transfusion.
Shortly after he was relinquished, the vet reached out to Camp Cocker with an SOS plea to take Archie into our rescue – to care for him while he heals, and ultimately to help him find a forever home to love & nurture him. We agreed, of course!
During Archie’s surgery, the day after he was relinquished, the veterinarian observed that his intestines were full of feces which had no place to go due to the blockage. As a result, his intestines were expanded & stretched to the max! Following the surgery, he remained on IV fluids and was fed a micro amount of food every few hours so that his intestines could begin slowly adjusting to food. He was starving, and unhappy, but feeding him even a little too much could cause “refeeding syndrome” and his organs could begin to fail!
In the weeks of recovery that have followed, Archie has been gaining weight at an appropriate pace. He visits the vet once a week for blood work & B-12 injections, and is a happier & healthier boy these days! As of July 15, Archie weighs about 60 pounds – and he looks spectacular! 🎉
On Thursday, July 11, Archie was neutered, and also had another small surgery called a gastropexy, which will help to protect him from experiencing intestinal “bloat” in the future. We then, finally, pronounce him ready for adoption!!
Archie was transferred to our friends at California Doodle Rescue and has now found his furever home.
He is sweet, affectionate, loves people, and wants to play with other dogs! He is potty trained and lets his caregivers know when he needs to go outside to potty.
