Bella’s Story

Rescue Date: August 21, 2025

Origin: West Los Angeles Shelter

Friday, September 4, 2026, was a bittersweet day as we said good-bye to Granny Bella. She was rescued in 2025 from the West Los Angeles animal shelter after she’d been relinquished there. Her former owners filled out an info sheet at the shelter, and we were crushed to learn that Bella had lived outdoors for her entire life.

This frail little lady has since been under the care of a full medical team – a  general vet, a cardiologist and an internist – for multiple conditions, including chronic pancreatitis with inflamed intestines per the internal medicine ultrasound. She was treated with steroids to try to reduce the inflammation, but the steroids then activated her already declining cognitive struggles.

Even on a pancreatic support diet, some days she wouldn’t eat, and on other days she ate four meals. Her body was starving but she often felt so yucky that she couldn’t manage to eat, and thus continued to lose weight, eventually getting down to just 12 pounds!

Bella’s foster mom spoiled her with a cheese burger and anything else Bella wanted. We take comfort in knowing that Bella was able to get the gift of her third act living indoors and feeling loved and cared for, and that she mattered!

The real gift for all of us who were invested in Bella’s rescue was that she let us all love her.

From the long distance fans who donated to her medical bills, to the past adopter that just recently did a month long fundraiser on her social media to help with Bella’s internist expenses, so many people got to love her from afar.

Loss and grief are difficult, but the silver lining is there if you look for it.

We all got to love Bella and she gave us that gift.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of Bella’s Rescue Village, the one time donors, the CAMPERS who donate monthly and most of all her foster home.

Rest in peace sweet Granny girlie and we hope that all of the dogs we have loved before are right now greeting you and showing you around over the Rainbow to help you feel at home.

We love you, Bella! ❤️💔❤️

Bella is affectionate, friendly, and playful – with mellow energy. Now that she’s receiving the medical care she needs and deserves, she’s doing well and is ready for her new family!

This sweet senior girl was relinquished to the shelter in rough shape! She was frail with bloody diarrhea, and she’d been losing weight since being in the shelter.

Bella was at the ER shortly after her rescue for a hacking cough (we were worried about her heart). She had chest x-rays and other diagnostics and luckily didn’t need to be hospitalized.

Bella also had a cardiologist work up and an echocardiogram to evaluate her heart health. The good news is she does not yet need medications for her degenerative valve. She has a Sinus arrhythmia and the cardiologist provided best anesthestic protocols.

Bella has now had her oronasal fistula surgery.  An oronasal fistula in a dog is an abnormal connection between the mouth and the nasal cavity, most often caused by advanced dental disease affecting the upper canine teeth or complications from tooth extraction.  Symptoms include sneezing and nasal discharge, and the condition requires surgical repair by a veterinary dentist using healthy gum tissue to close the hole. This has resolved her cough due to irritation.

Bella currently wears a diaper for leaks.
