Bella

This sweet senior girl was relinquished to the shelter in rough shape! She was frail with bloody diarrhea, and she’d been losing weight since being in the shelter.

Bella was at the ER shortly after her rescue for a scary hacking cough (we were worried about her heart). She had chest x-rays and other diagnostics and luckily didn’t need to be hospitalized. Antibiotics have helped Bella’s cough to gradually resolve.

Bella also had a cardiologist work up and an echocardiogram to evaluate her heart health. The good news is she does not yet need medications for her degenerative valve. She has a Sinus arrhythmia and the cardiologist provided best anesthestic protocols.

Bella is now on the schedule in October to get surgery for her two oronasal fistulas. An oronasal fistula in a dog is a severe abnormal connection between the mouth and the nasal cavity, most often caused by advanced dental disease affecting the upper canine teeth or complications from tooth extraction.  Symptoms include sneezing and nasal discharge, and the condition requires surgical repair by a veterinary dentist using healthy gum tissue to close the hole. This could be the underlaying reason for Bella’s recent hacking cough due to chronic irritation and infection.
