Doc’s Story

Rescue Date: April 28, 2026

Origin: Harbor Animal Care Shelter, Los Angeles, California

Welcome to Camp Cocker Rescue, Doc!

We rescued this handsome tri-color Cocker Spaniel from the Harbor Shelter in San Pedro, CA. He appeared to have a few medical issues that needed attention.

He came to us emaciated, his hips and ribs prominent due to no fat and muscle loss. His rear legs have some ataxia (showing incoordination). His ears are infected, and his teeth show heavy tartar.

He doesn’t know it yet, but he is about to get “the works.” Gold star treatment all the way!

Following some specialty consults, we now know what kind of medical treatment Doc will need, and how soon we can provide it:

1) Doc has Dilated Cardiomyopathy (a disease that weakens the heart muscles) for which he’s currently being treated with heart medication called Pimobendan (aka Vetmedin) as well as Taurine supplements to support heart health. He should be able to safely undergo anesthesia for surgery as soon as two weeks after starting on the medication; and 2) Doc needs double knee surgery!!

The plan and timeline for him is as follows:

  • Doc is currently waiting to be cleared to have his neuter surgery, a dental, and repair to his lip folds. (His originally scheduled date of June 11 has already been postponed due to current GI issues.) After those three procedures, we’ll then want him to recover for 3-4 weeks.
  • Schedule the surgery for the left knee (that knee is completely out of the socket, with bone rubbing on bone) followed by a couple of months of physical therapy.
  • Schedule the right knee surgery (that knee is luxating in and out of the socket) followed by physical therapy on both knees.
  • Approximately six months from now, the cardiologist wants Doc to have a recheck and a repeat EKG.

And then, at long last, Doc should be ready for adoption! Whew! We know, that’s a lot to go through, but we believe it’s worth it to give Doc the chance to have a pain-free life!

*Age is always an estimate based on veterinary examination.

Doc has been rescued in honor of Bentley, who we recently lost to the Rainbow Bridge. We are still trying to fundraise to pay off Bentley’s vet debt, so any donation is truly appreciated. We now need donations for Doc’s medical care. Please help us to welcome Doc with a donation in any amount here on his webpage.
