Dougal’s Story
Rescue Date: January 2, 2024
Origin: Los Angeles Carson Shelter
Grand-paw Dougal booked his one way ticket to go over the rainbow bridge, and he made his trip yesterday afternoon, 3/29/2026.
Dougal was never expected to live for more than two years when we rescued him in January 2024. Based on his condition when rescued, we expected him to live six months tops (and we feared that six months might not have been a realistic hope on our part). It just shows you the power of going “all in” for a dog that never had quality proactive healthcare before.
We rescued Dougal from the Carson/Los Angeles county animal shelter in January 2024 at 15-ish years old. He was frail and weak from pancreatitis and pneumonia. His mouth was rotted, with the roots of some of his teeth were showing (ouchie). He needed entropion surgery on his eyes because he was uncomfortable with his eyes being scratched everytime he blinked. And he needed to gain some weight so he could go under anesthesia for surgical procedures.
He had two veterinarians – a general vet for all of his surgeries, and a holisitic vet for acupuncture, PEMF treatments, laser therapy and Ozone therapy. He was on lots of supplements to support his body, and was fed prescription hepatic support Just Food For Dogs.
Dougal was also fortunate enough to have a loving foster family dedicated to his care – and who were a huge part of the transformation of his spirit, going from having no hope, to excitement for what every new day might bring.
Dougal was ultimately diagnosed with Laryngeal Paralysis, which gave us the opportunity to learn more about this condition. Laryngeal Paralysis can cause choking and aspiration, leading to frequent bouts of pneumonia. Chinese herbs and integrative supportive treatments were provided to help make him more comfortable..
Ultimately, his eating began to slow down to “starts & stops” and he began losing some of the healthy weight that he’d gained after he’d been rescued. He was taken to the vet to confirm it was time.
Dougal was able to make his rounds to say good-bye to the people in his life. He visited his favorite dog sitter, he face timed with neighbors who were out of town and wanted to say good-bye. This little old man had so many friends in the neighborhood who knew him by name.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who has supported Dougal through your donations, by sending him yummy meals from his Wish List, or just cheering him on through his final chapter! You’ve all made a difference in the life of one super hero dog!
He was the goodest boy ever!! 💔🌈
