Rosie’s Story
Rescue Date: November 11, 2025
Origin: Hesperia Shelter
Rosie adjusted to her new home foster environment quickly! She is relaxed, wagging her tail, giving kisses, and seeking human interaction. She is so LOVELY!
Welcome to Camp Cocker Rescue, beautiful Rosie! This poor girl has been through a lot of stress over the past few months. She entered a shelter in Hesperia, CA, and was adopted by a member of the general public. The shelter gave the new owners thirty days to bring her back for a spay surgery. This didn’t get done, and she was pregnant; she gave birth to puppies four weeks before Camp Cocker rescued her.
Rosie was brought back to the shelter; the owners claimed that all of her puppies “found homes,” and legally, animal control cannot do anything. The owners said Rosie was “aggressive” to a twelve-year-old child, and it could have been that she was protecting her puppies.
We plan to adopt Rosie to a loving, caring, adult-only home and prepare any future adopters to go slow with her introductions to strangers. Right now, Rosie is presenting herself as nervous with strangers. After a calm approach, sitting quietly on the ground, and letting her sniff and decide when she is ready to be pet, she is enjoying human interaction.
Rosie is simply a dog that will need to give her consent before interacting with strangers. Dog-savvy adopters will need to meet her where she is and not rush her into any interactions until she signals she is ready.
Rosie is very smart, knowing to sit when the treat bag comes out, and will enjoy a home that likes to play fetch! She likes being near people on the couch, but also relaxes on her own in her doggie bed.
We had a dog trainer evaluation who suggested that Rosie would do best in a home that has at least one confident resident dog for Rosie to take cues from.
Also, a home with a fenced in backyard so that Rosie does not immediately need to be flooded with the stress of seeing strangers on walks.
She does need daily cardio and exercise because she is so young and energetic, but she also needs slow baby steps to being socialized out in public settings.
A home without a lot of visitors would be best so that Rosie can experience stability and establish a predictable routine, before working on her socialization skills with meeting strangers.
Camp Cocker Rescue will sponsor some force free dog trainer sessions with Rosie’s adopters. It is important that her future people are committed to working with a professional. (force free only, definitely no “balanced” or aversive training approaches should be used on a nervous dog)
She is blossoming so much already that if someone would understand her and meet her where she is, she has the potential to become more confident when meeting new people.
*Please note that any age provided is only an estimate, based on veterinary examination.
