WELCOME TO CAMP COCKER RESCUE, TATER TOT!

We rescued this little 4-5 month-old terrier mix on 9/2/23 from the Downey/Los Angeles County Animal Shelter. His new name is Tater Tot and he was described by the shelter as having had a dislocated left shoulder - and possibly a fracture. We were able to get a surgical consult quickly with one of our regular veterinary specialists to get a better picture of what’s going on.

The vet explained that Tater Tot’s dislocation is not able to be repaired because the injury is too old, and new bone growth has fused outside of the joint. After testing Tater Tot for pain, the vet assured us that despite his limp, his dislocation is not painful. She describes it as a mechanical issue that causes the limp - as opposed to the limp as a reaction to pain or discomfort. In other words, no surgical intervention is currently advisable.

Tater Tot’s foster mom has this to say about the little love bug:

'“Tater Tot is an incredibly sweet boy! He has the nicest temperament and is pretty mellow considering his young age. He likes to play with balls, toys, and other dogs, but really loves napping and being around people. He's very nice with his kitty foster sister, too. Because he's still a pup, he will chew on things he shouldn’t but is easily redirected to an appropriate chew toy. He is fairly active, despite his limp, and has no problem getting around or even jumping up onto the couch, but does seem to tire easily. He does well in a crate overnight as long as he is near me; otherwise, he will intermittently whine and howl. He always has a wagging tail and loves getting belly rubs! We're still working on potty training, but he regularly potties outside and uses the potty pads when indoors more often than not.”

Tater Tot is being fostered in the Los Angeles area.
