We’re sometimes asked about the dangers of using choke collars or prong collars on your dog, and we’ve been happy to share what we know. Better yet, why not hear it from the experts? Following are two great articles that we believe will be helpful in answering all of your collar questions!

A Tail of Two Cocker Spaniels

JUNIPER - RESCUED FROM THE SAN DIEGO HUMANE SOCIETY SHELTER

BUFFY - RESCUED INTERNATIONALLY FROM MONGOLIA

BOTH RESCUED & ADOPTED SUMMER OF 2023

The rescue of these two young Cocker Spaniels is worthy of a tail or two. For those of you wondering about shelter rescue vs international rescue, these two happy rescue stories are especially for you!

JUNIPER was rescued on June 17, from the San Diego Humane Society Shelter where she was relinquished by her owners who reported that she was sick and they could no longer afford to care for her. She was reported by her owners to be 1.5 years old.

Juniper was in an Addisonian Crisis (an exacerbation of Addison’s Disease) when the San Diego Humane Society urgently reached out to Camp Cocker Rescue for help. She desperately needed advanced medical attention to stop the downward spiral that threatened her life!

We had her admitted to a veterinary specialty hospital where she spent over 24 hours receiving the IV fluids and medications she needed to balance her system & begin her return to health. Juniper was confirmed to have Addison’s Disease which is treatable and manageable. She could have a normal long life, but ONLY if her adopters would be truly engaged in proactive care.

Camp Cocker was ecstatic to get an unexpected adoption application from an amazing family with not only Cocker Spaniel experience, but Addison’s experience as well, and an earnest desire to take it on again with Juniper! Yes, Juniper hit the jackpot, and is now sharing a joyous new life, full of the kind of adventures that will work for her, with some very happy adopters!

When we can rescue a Cocker Spaniel from a local shelter, provide life-saving medical intervention, then find the perfect adopters to meet her every need, all of our boxes are checked!

#CampCockerBuffy #InternationalDogRescue

BUFFY is a lovely young female Cocker Spaniel Freedom Flyer from Mongolia. In recent years, Camp Cocker has been partnering with volunteers in South Korea and Mongolia whose mission is to rescue dogs from deplorable conditions, provide basic medical care and shelter, and get them into good homes.

Buffy’s rescuer, Zorigoo, originally named her Bus because she was found as a stray (obviously uncared for) who walked onto a city bus and sat next to his wife! This turns out to have been a very fortunate choice for Buffy!

Buffy’s anticipated arrival created quite a stir at Camp Cocker. We received many adoption applications even before she arrived, but we needed to wait for her arrival in Los Angeles before we could begin to decide who would make a good match for Buffy, based on her personality and any needs she might have.

Once Buffy arrived we discovered that she was a delightful dog - fun and curious, with high energy needs. As it happens we received an application from a family that we believed would meet all of Buffy’s needs perfectly - and that she would meet theirs, which is exactly how things have worked out. The photos that we receive show everyone, including Buffy, always happy and smiling!

To rescue Cocker Spaniels in need of a home, and to adopt them to humans in need of a Cocker Spaniel, has always been a primary goal of Camp Cocker Rescue. International rescue & our Freedom Flyer Program helps us to continue to meet that goal!

Teaching Children Doggy Manners

Teaching Children Doggy Manners

There are many benefits of having a dog in a home with children; however, it’s important to make sure that both your dog and your children have been trained to respect one another. Because dogs and humans speak very different languages, we’ll focus this article on teaching kids how to properly interact with dogs.
